From Hallelujah Night to a year-round table
I grew up in Idimu, Lagos. Every December, my grandmother, Prophetess Elizabeth Olufunke Oni, known to her community as Betty, would host Hallelujah Night at CAC Olubori. The sick, widows, and mothers with infants came for a hot meal and a bag of staples. I remember a participant who said it was the first Christmas meal she had eaten in twelve years.
That memory shaped everything. Later, while volunteering at a food pantry in Washington, D.C. and through my work with the United for Kids Foundation, I saw what consistent, year-round food access could do for families: it freed them to plan, to invest in school, to keep small businesses open. Hunger steals time. A steady table gives it back.
Betty's Table of Hope brings that same consistency to Idimu. We operate from the church my grandmother served, alongside local leaders who know every street and every household. The pantry runs every other Saturday, year-round, with a transparent dashboard and a clear path to local handover.
This is not my project; it is the community's. My job is to build the systems, raise the funds, and step back so that Idimu owns the table.
